Which Behaviors Does Allah Curse?
Curse means being away from Allah’s forgiveness and mercy (Lisan al-Arab, L-ʿA-N art.). According to some tellings and narrations, it is stated that Allah curses many behaviors (eg, those who have eyebrows removed, those who have tattoos). However, according to the Quan, Allah only curses the behaviors and people that are revealed through revelation. For this, the only valid curses are:
• Disbelievers (al-Ahzab [33] 64).
• Hypocrite men and hypocritical women, polytheist men and women, (at-Tawba [9] 68; al-Fath [48] 6).
• Pharaoh and his dignitaries (Hud [11] 96-99; al-Qasas [28] 42).
• The Iblis (al-Hijr [15] 35; Sad [38] 78).
• The wrongdoers who hinder Allah’s way, who want to make it crooked, and who deny the Hereafter (al-Araf [7] 44).
• Those who are unbelievers (covering, ignoring) after belief (Al Imran [3] 86-87).
• Those who believe in idolatry and taghut (an-Nisa [4] 51-52).
• Those who break their promise to Allah, break the ties that Allah wants to be adhered to, and make mischief in the land (al-Maida [5] 13; al-Rad [13] 25).
• Those who deny the signs of their Lord, disobey his messengers and follow every order of the stubborn tyrant (Hud [11] 59-60).
• Those who disbelieve, rebel and go to extremes (al-Maida [5] 78).
• Those who disbelieved and those who died as unbelievers (al-Baqara [2] 88, 89, 161; an-Nisa [4] 46).
• Those who fabricate lies against Allah (Hud [11] 18).
• Those who hide the book (al-Baqara [2] 159).
• Those who hurt Allah and His Messenger (al-Ahzab [33] 57).
• Those who kill a believer/person deliberately/willfully (an-Nisa [4] 93; al-Maida [5] 32).
• Those who slander Allah (al-Maida [5] 64).
• Those who slander honest and unaware believing women of adultery (al-Nur [24] 23).
