Does healing come from God, or from doctors and medicine?

The verse that best explains the concept of healing in the Quran is this: “When I am sick, it is He who heals me.” (Shuara [26] 80). Allah provides healing, for example, through honey (Nahl [16] 69). Again, as seen in the story of Prophet Job (Ayyub) Allah has placed healing in water and plants. What Prophet Job had to do to attain healing was to seek these things, to search for them, and to be patient, that is, to take action (Sad [38] 42, 44). The Quran is healing for spiritual illnesses of faith (Yunus [10] 57).
Therefore, when we fall ill, simply saying “O Allah, grant me healing!” but not resorting to the medicine, vaccine, or treatment process created by Allah is not a behavior in accordance with the Quran. Similarly, attributing healing entirely to medicine, doctors, or treatment is also not correct according to Islam. No medicine or treatment method is 100% effective and safe. Like all diseases, all medications and treatment methods can cause harm or benefit according to certain scientific principles and rules.
The human mind that strives to cure diseases, the scientific knowledge on this subject, and the materials —both natural and synthetic— that are collected and purified are all created by Allah from nothing. Because it is only Allah who creates, appreciates, and grants healing. Those who discover, describe, learn, teach, and distribute healing are scientists, doctors, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals. Recovery depends both on the efforts of the doctor and the patient, and on Allah granting healing. Therefore, it is Allah who heals. The doctor’s role is to assist in this healing process. However, statements such as “I defeated the disease myself. I owe my life to this medicine, to that doctor. I am alive thanks to science. Nature healed me.” are not appropriate for a Muslim. Because the One worthy of gratitude is the Almighty Allah, the Owner of all things.
In conclusion, a Muslim must maintain the following balance: A Muslim should strive for healing, apply treatment methods, and take medication. Then, he should pray to our Lord and trust in Him, always remembering that it is Allah who creates illness and grants healing.
