The Prohibition of Women Traveling Alone is Against the Quran
“… All journeys end in him.” (The Quran, al-Maida [5] 18).
The reason why women are not allowed to travel alone is not the Quran, but narrations and tradition. In the Quran, on the other hand, it is seen that women travel alone quite naturally: “Tell the story of Maryam in this Book, too. One day she was separated from her family, she was withdrawn somewhere on the east side.” (The Quran, Maryam [19] 16). The information limiting the journey to 90 km is based only on the opinions of religious scholars.
The essential aspects of travel for both men and women is road safety: “…Travel there day and night in safety.” (The Quran, Saba [34] 18).
As a result, once a woman is safe, she can travel whether it is for a woman’s duty or for the purpose of sightseeing, seeing or worship (hajj). Additionally there are no religious barriers to traveling alone, with a friend or in a group!
